Psychotherapy - What for?!
- What can a psychotherapist do for me? I already know it all! My friends, my mother/father/sister/brother understand me just fine, I don't need a therapist! (...and you've been repeating one another the same things for years, to no avail!)
- A psychotherapist teaches you to think positively and to believe in yourself, it's clear to me, I've read many such books and especially social media posts! (...and positive thinking has done what to solve your problems, except add another one - the guilt of not thinking positively enough and that everything is your own fault?!)
- If you feel bad, you just need exercise, fitness, meditation, massage, yoga or a walk in nature! (...and when you get home, it is again more of the same!
- I don't want to talk about my problems, I'd rather forget them or get drunk/ stoned! (...you try to forget them but they don't forget you and they come back!)
- What is the point of talking about the past when it is already past! (...the past never passes, it is in your head until you can understand it!)
- Psychotherapy is for the psychotic and weak minded! I am strong and normal! (Does being strong and normal make you happy?!)
- Psychotherapy is expensive and lasts a long time! You pay just to talk to someone!(Talking about the essentials never and to no one is a lot more expensive and lasts a lifetime!)
- It takes too much time, I don't have that time! (...and you stand in front of the TV/phone/computer for 5 hours every day!)
- I don't know how to choose a therapist at all! I don't know the difference between a psychotherapist, a psychoanalyst, a psychologist, a psychiatrist...! (Interested in finding out?! It is not like nuclear physics, anyway!)
